Fountainswimming: Wake (2024)

In the Wake of Tragedy, We Must Choose to Witness

SPRING 2024

The Fountainswimming Journal is a student-led publication at Cranbrook Academy of Art that offers a yearly theme under which a committee selects art writing, including but not limited, to poetry, studio interviews, exhibition reviews, and academic essays. The theme of submissions for the 2023-24 year was “Wake.”

My selected contribution to this publication was an essay titled, In the Wake of Tragedy, We Must Choose to Witness. This essay attempts to archive and offer a time stamp to the specific moment I was living through in my grad school experience. Witnessing the Palestinian genocide from my phone, witnessing my kin murdered around the world, witnessing students and my community be punished for their attempt to reckon with institutional oppression felt important to document and essential to grapple with. This was my offering.
